The paper examines exceptions to free trade under GATT regulations contained in Article XX analyzing the exceptions permitted due to the protection of human, animal or plant life (Article XX b), and the conservation of exhaustible natural resources (Article XX g). Cases falling under Article XX (b) and (g) are discussed, environmental protection provisions formulated in the Treaty of Nice 2001 are reviewed with references to related cases.
