This proposal is for a study that focuses on preventing and combating torture in Africa, and pays specific attention to Libya, Cote d'ivorie, Egypt, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Senegal, Gambia, and South Africa. The research question is identified, and the paper then provides a definition of torture. The legal position of torture is discussed, and the role that non-Governmental and International Organisations play in its prevention is discussed. The study aims to examine the different factors that can block torture, as well as the things that can be done to combat and prevent torture. The case studies that will be used are identified, as well as the proposed research methodology. The proposed timeframe is outlined, as is the contribution that this study may have to the field in general.
