This dissertation focuses on the concept and essence of restorative justice, and aims to examine how it has impacted and challenged the juvenile justice system. The objectives are to critically examine the meaning and origin of restorative justice with the view of understanding how it works, to whose benefit and at what cost, if any, to gain a better understanding of the youth justice system, particularly in the United Kingdom, to establish if there are substantial differences between traditional justice and restorative justice, and to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of restorative justice, particularly in relation to young offenders, their victims and the community as a whole. The review of literature discusses a wide range of topics, some of which include the principles of restorative justice, and youth justice in the UK. Throughout the rest of the dissertation, topics including referral orders, the crime and disorder act 1998, and recidivism are assessed.
