The dissertation addresses the problem of Europe's economic integration through legislative harmonisation with regard to consumer protection in cross-border transactions. The study focuses on the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) of 2005 discussing its aims, scope, and the innovative approaches introduced by the European Community (EC). Implementation of the Directive within the national law of the UK and Belgium is examined. Comparisons are made between the two EU member states acknowledging that the UK unlike Belgium does not have a general rule that regulates the fairness of commercial practices, and arguing the difficulties of UCPD implementation.
