The Cold War is described as a conflict of opposing ideologies and social systems, with the USA adopting capitalism, democracy and private enterprise and the USSR adopting communism, socialism and state ownership. Despite both nations possessing nuclear weapons, the paper argues that, as neither superpower wanted to initiate aggression during the conflict and risk mutual destruction, the threat of actual war at that time was minimal compared to the current global situation.
