This essay explores the belief that civilizations which are defined by their culture and cultural identities, with religion as the most important factor, will shape patterns of cohesion, disintegration, and conflict in the post-Cold War world. Confrontation between the Western and the Islamic and Sinic (Chinese) civilizations are seen as increasingly likely and could pose the most danger to international security. With the writings of Huntington as its main point of reference for the debate, the paper aims to refute his broad and sweeping assumptions about the nature of civilizations and points to the diversity of the Islamic world as one of the examples that call his theories into question.
