This paper discusses the great acceleration, which relates to the increase in the population and aims to assess the impact that it has had on the global environment. The paper begins by discussing when the process started, focusing on the second world war. The role that the increase in commerce and production played is analyzed. The paper links the development of England in terms of manufacturing, population and the economy with the effect on the environment. CFC’s, CO2 levels and fossil fuels, are amongst the environmental issues discussed, and this is followed by a discussion regarding the London Fog. The higher population levels meant a greater demand for food, and the paper also discusses this. Conclusions are made regarding the phenomenon of the ‘great acceleration’, regarding the way it affected the environment.
