The paper debates how far the revolution in Iran in 1979 was the result of religious causes and therefore ‘Islamic' or as a reaction to political and economic issues that the country faced and so largely ‘Un-Islamic.' Described as a populist movement, economic inequality and political alienation reaching a climax when the Shah eliminated Iran's dual party system, are cited as the flashpoints to events. The paper suggests that as very few cultural elements were the cause of the revolution it can be deemed ‘Un-Islamic.'
