The paper examines the French revolution of 1789 and the Russian revolution of 1917 comparing the strategies they used to fight injustice and inequality, and looking at the possibility of the universal application of human rights in theory and in practice. Approaches to women's rights and liberties during the two revolutions are detailed, humanitarian ideals and values of the French and Russian revolutions are discussed in the context of their outcomes.
