This paper examines the French Revolution in 1789, and aims to assess whether it is the product of economic negligence. The paper begins by introducing the background to the economic situation in France by examining the nature of the economy at the time, sources of wealth, systems of taxation, and French trade links. The paper then examines Jacques Necker and Charles Alexandre de Calonne, two financial advisors of King Louis XVI. Necker is examined in reference to the American War of Independence, the way he planed to reform the economy and his achievements. Calonne is then discussed in reference to his legacy, his plans for the economy and the Assembly of Notables. Bankruptcy and the period leading to the revolution are also discussed.
