The dissertation investigates the effect of the collaborative learning method on primary school maths students highlighting the importance to motivate and engage pupils in their mathematics learning. Literature is reviewed on the concept and methods of collaborative learning, pupils' attitudes towards mathematics, pupils' motivation and engagement, etc. A study is conducted in primary school pupils aged 7-8 using the scheme called “Improving Primary Mathematics” (IPM). Conclusions are made about the factors influencing pupils' motivation and engagement during collaborative learning tasks, and the effects of the scheme implementation on the pupils' motivation and engagement in mathematics.
