The dissertation examines the contribution of the writing activities into the process of second language (L2) learning using a case study of learning English in intermediate-level Saudi Arabian (SA) students. Literature is reviewed on the linguistic and educational background of the SA students, the theory of second language acquisition, communication theory, the role of writing in second language acquisition, traditional and non-traditional teaching methods, etc. A case study is conducted of SA students aged between 13 and 15 using the methods of observation, and evaluating teaching approaches to L2 learning. Conclusions are made about the applicability and efficiency of L2 learning theories to the teaching of English as L2 in SA teenagers.
