The paper looks at the role of culture in mathematics and its impact on the achievement of primary school children. The Western view of value neutral mathematics is discussed arguing cultural differences in the understanding of core mathematical concepts and addressing the issues of collective mental programming behind pupils’ cultural sensitivity in a multicultural classroom setting. References are made to Hofstede’s theory of power distance with regard to teacher-student relationships highlighting the importance of the balance between knowledge and culture.
