This paper aims to examine whether foreign students think that the IELTS tests they took in their own country is the right level for studying in the UK. The paper begins by evaluating the reasons why students chose to apply to foreign universities, and this is discussed in reference to globalisation. The IELTS test is examined in reference to other tests, and the student’s expectations of the test in their native countries are examined. The paper concludes by evaluating the washback theory.
