The paper looks at the applications of collaborative virtual environments (CVE) to support social interaction and learning. Factors that influence the success of online learning are discussed, the CVE of Second Life (SL) as is evaluated a platform for education highlighting the communication methods used by SL that help to bridge the gaps in information literacy. The benefits of SL applications are illustrated using the example of CyberOne.
