This literature review focuses on virtual learning environments (VLE), and begins by providing the background and definition to learning. Different theories are discussed like Pavlov’s classical conditioning theory, Guthrie’s theory of contiguity, and Hull’s theory. The paper then discusses the cognitive school of learning and the constructivist theory of learning. VLE’s are then examined, and the review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the concept. Conclusions are made regarding the suitability of VLE’s for reaching English Literature.
