The dissertation examines the impact of long working hours (LWH) on the workers within the UK security industry in the context of the EU Work Time Directive (WTD). Literature is reviewed on the LWH culture, the causes of LWH, the health impacts of LWH, the relationship between LWH and employees’ productivity and performance levels, the job flexibility principle as a method to reduce the negative side effects of LWH, etc. The methods of the research are based on secondary data and the primary data collected from interviews and sampling observation. Conclusions are made about the implications of the research findings for the workers in the security industry and their relevance for the debate around the EU work-time directive. Recommendations are suggested about the ways to reduce employee turnover in the security industry.
