This dissertation focuses on the concept of the work life balance in reference to the NHS. The objectives are to critically review the principal factors involved in improving the work-life balance, to critically evaluate the theoretical basis for providing work-life balance, to critically evaluate the NHS work-life balance policies stemming from Europe and the UK with particular emphasis on the advantages, challenges and drawbacks involved, to evaluate critically the effectiveness of the different work patterns in the NHS and the extent to which they help meet a balance between personal and professional life, and to critically evaluate NHS policies and practices that are designed to help improve work-life balance so as to achieve desirable business-related gains. The objectives are met through analysis of literature relating to topics like the background of the NHS, the work life balance in the UK, and the work life balance in the NHS. The dissertation then moves on to the research methodology, which explains the research approach chosen. The remainder of the dissertation examines the findings and presents a conclusion.
