The paper examines the role of leadership in motivating staff, encouraging teamwork, and contributing to organisational success. Theories of leadership are reviewed including trait theory, behavioural theory, group management theory, etc. Various leadership styles and models of management are characterised. A case study is conducted of the leadership contribution to the success of the UK telecommunications company O2. Cultural differences in leadership approaches are discussed comparing Japanese and US leaders. Conclusions are made about the importance of leadership for organisational success.
