This dissertation discusses absenteeism and its relation to ethnicity, job type and gender. The study focuses on the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Job satisfaction is analysed in detail by means of the job characteristics model and also the value percept put forth by Locke (1966). It is found that job satisfaction depends on the job type. The relation between gender and job satisfaction is then investigated. The dissertation analyses the link between culture and absenteeism and attempts to link this to ethnicity. Several questions are addressed: Is there a certain pattern for absenteeism within the ethnicity? Is there a certain pattern for absenteeism between employees of the same job type? Is there a certain pattern for absenteeism between employees of the same gender? What is the level of employees' job satisfaction - being one of the assumed reasons for absenteeism? Is there a relationship between absenteeism and the overall job satisfaction level of employees within the same ethnicity? Is there a relationship between absenteeism and the overall job satisfaction level of employees within employees of the same job type? Is there a relationship between absenteeism and the overall job satisfaction level of employees of the same gender?
