S/HR/299. Defining High Involvement Work Practice (HIWP)

The paper examines and defines the concept of High Involvement Work Practice (HIWP) and how these practices sub-divide (yet relate) as: high involvement, high commitment, and high performance across all levels of an organisation. But according to important research on this subject conducted by Edwards and Wright (2001) and Lawler (1992) there are slight differences associated with each strand with regard to their significance. The research shows that high levels of economic return are achieved as a result of the serious application to business practice of the three strands, and that they are now linked to HR best practice. The paper presents two case studies which relate to incentive, training and career progression schemes, and management-employee open communication systems within the Royal Automobile Association and the North Bedfordshire Mental Health Hospital.
