The dissertation investigates the motivations behind volunteer tourism when people go abroad during holidays to do voluntary work. The paper argues whether volunteer tourists are mainly motivated by altruism and explores the personal characteristics associated with voluntary tourism. The review of literature touches on the features of modern and postmodern tourism, volunteer tourism as a form of alternative tourism, motivational theories related to tourism, etc. The methods of the research are based on qualitative and quantitative approaches and include primary data collected through six interviews and an e-survey. Conclusions are made about the demographical and psychological characteristics of volunteer tourists and the benefits associated with the experience they gain from their voluntary work in other countries.
