To be 'green' is now fashionable. During the last few decades tourism industry has changed towards to more environmental, cultural and social concerns. The objective of 'sustainability' has only been set in Spain in the 1980s while most of costal resorts have already suffered the serious negative impact from mass tourism. This report will first identify the concept of sustainable tourism development and next take into account of two case studies: the Balearic Islands and L'Estartit, to investigate the sustainable tourism development and also the barriers in both resorts. Finally explore the stages of both destinations and discuss the feasibility of resort lifecycle aiding the sustainable tourism development.
