In the late 1980s tourism in Spain, especially in the familiar resorts, began a decline which by the end of the decade, appeared to be threatening their economy. The Spanish Tourism writerity determined to change Spain's image of packaged cheap holidays in the sun and promote 'cultural tourism' in an attempt to attract the more discerning (and higher spending) visitor in search of culture, quality and natural beauty rather than sun, fun, leisure and pleasure. This report provides an overview and analysis as to why the Spanish Tourism writerity found the repositioning necessary and focuses primarily on the Balearic Islands. The report provides an evaluation of four of the new products that have emerged during the last decade: A new image, an increase in culturally aware holidays, an improvement in quality and an attraction of new market segments.
