This essay explains why the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP) refers to the concept of environmental sustainability instead of sustainability in general. The origins of sustainability are investigated and the development of the use of the word since it was first introduced as an environmental term is discussed. How the meaning of sustainability has changed and been reinterpreted, losing its original focus, is debated with reference to the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution 2002.
