The paper presents a case-study analysis of the procedures which a start-up entrepreneur – a fictitious “Mr. Smith” – should observe, not just from the purely practical steps of company formation (the six main types of company formation are presented) but on the possible methods which could be adopted to sustain profitability, based upon the application of Porter’s generic strategies – such as product differentiation. The paper suggests how the company should tailor the provision of its services by the capacity it possesses, such as: number of employees, employees’ qualification and experience, equipment, and facilities. The importance of company vision and a commitment to customer-relationship management is also examined.
