Next, a Porters Five Forces analysis of the industry is performed, illustrating the very high levels of competitive rivalry in the industry and the increasing threat of the low-cost carriers (EasyJet, bmi baby etc…) on the flag carriers (British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Olympic Airlines). Finally, SWOT analyses of British Airways, Air France, KLM, Lufthansa and Olympic Airways are carried out. This highlights the importance that strategic alliances, size and technological innovation have upon the profitability of the two main European airlines, British Airways and the newly formed Air France-KLM group, but also to Lufthansa, as Europes third largest airline. The seriously detrimental position held by the recently privatized Greek airline, Olympic Airways, is also outlined. Overall, the analysis emphases the inherent threats and weaknesses suffered throughout the industry, as well as the importance of innovation, alliances and size to success.

- WORDS:
- 2000
- DATE:
- 2005
- PRICE:
- 29.99 GBP
One of the most important ideas in marketing is the understanding of customer needs and desires. These desires and needs of customers are dynamic and are constantly changing, furthermore, at the same time the companys effectiveness and power to meet these needs are also constantly changing. Due to the fact that there are many external influences on both the company and on the consumers it is necessary for a company to have an understanding of these influences so that they can perfect the current and future marketing mixes as well as other marketing decisions. A comprehensive understanding of these factors can be obtained by using the S.T.E.P method of environmental scanning, this model groups the many environmental influences together into the following categories, sociocultural, technological, economic and competitive and political and legal. An example of how an analysis of S.T.E.P. factors can be used to explain the success of a product is the off trade premium lager market in the U.K. This particular product was selected as a useful example, as the take home premium lager market in the U.K is both large, worth ?620 million, and increasing, increased by 15.4% in97 (p131, Brassington & Pettittt, 2000). The premium lager market is represented by a large number of products, however, to enable an easier analysis the study will focus on some of the brands owned by the main breweries in the sector, such as Grolsch, Becks, Kronenburg 1664, Heineken and with an extra focus on one of the market leaders, Stella Artois. With this particular example, all four of the main S.T.E.P. factors are important, with particular emphasis on socio-cultural and technological factors.
