The dissertation seeks to identify whether small and medium size enterprises (SME) in Kazakhstan can improve the economic growth of the country during the world financial crisis. The review of literature touches on the features of SME, their role in the Asian financial crisis of 1997-1998, the SME development policy of Kazakhstan after the Asian crisis and at present time, etc. The research methods are based on secondary data analysis and quantitative estimation of the country’s economic indicators including regression analysis of relevant statistical data and economic variables, i.e. GDP, world oil prices, exports and imports, inflation rates, FDI, etc. Conclusions are made about the position of SME in Kazakhstan’s economy.
