The dissertation examines the reasons why law firms and their clients engage in the strategic outsourcing of legal services. The review of literature touches on the theory of strategic management, strategic outsourcing, and the impact of globalisation on companies’ decision to outsource. The methods of the research are based on secondary data and a comparative case study of four companies engaged in outsourcing, i.e. two law firms: Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance, and two client-side firms: General Electric and Rio Tinto. Conclusions are made about the drivers of the outsourcing strategy and the role of resources and transaction costs in the decision to outsource.
