This paper aims to assess the reasons why takeovers often fail, and begins by presenting the rationale behind a takeover attempt. The reasons why they fail are associated with poor mitigation, excessive outlays and poor planning and the paper then discusses the evidence that supports these claims. The non financial reasons for an unsuccessful take over attempt are discussed before conclusions are made.
