The paper analyses the potential causes of failure in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) looking at two cases of M&A failure in order to identify the mechanisms that may lead to failure. A list of other causes of M&A failures is provided and supported by evidence found in related academic literature. The failure of the merger between Geisinger Health System (GHS) and Hershey Medical Center (HMC) that became Penn State Geisinger Health Plan (PSGHP) is analysed.
