The dissertation looks at the role of private equity (PE) financing in helping UK family businesses survive and succeed during the economic downturn. Literature is reviewed on the theory of family business, agency theory and the features of family firms’ financing and governance. The methodology of the research is based on the analysis of secondary data and primary data collected via interviews with participants from five organisations. Conclusions are made about the trends in PE financing of family businesses and its relationship to the companies’ governance structure highlighting the benefits of private equity partnering.
