The dissertation addresses the business and ethical issues faced by Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) and other oil and gas companies examining their management of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Literature is reviewed on the history of the company, the theory of CSR, the difficulties of operating in the oil and gas industry, etc. A study is conducted to compare CSR components practices in seven oil and gas corporations, i.e. Shell. BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Total, Gazprom and Petrochina using secondary research data. Shell's CSR policies are evaluated against those of their competitors in the industry. Conclusions are made as to whether the company is meeting CSR criteria.

This report provides a comparison of two companies: British American Tobacco and Unilever and how these companies approach sustainability reporting. As Corporate Social Responsibility reporting (CSR) is supervised by the Global Reporting Initiative the two sustainability reports are compared and assessed against its standards. BAT and Unilever both produce consumer goods but while the former’s main product is cigarettes (traditionally a threat to the environment), the latter specialises in a wide range of goods from tea to shampoo and body wash (these products traditionally are not viewed as a big threat to environment). Since the produce of the companies have different impact on environment and health, the firms had to emphasise quite different points in their sustainability strategy.
