This paper looks at ethical issues associated with online social networking platforms. Using the new GetInTouch network as a basis for reference, the analysis considers the risks associated with users’ privacy in relation to the supply of personal information to third parties, and the sale of users’ data for marketing purposes. In order for the site to secure users’ rights, the paper considers a number of approaches which might increase the ethical values of such websites – including invitation systems and online contracts.
