The dissertation examines the features of traditional Islamic finance looking at the development of Islamic banking explaining the perception of interest (‘Riba') and its prohibition by Islamic law, defining the difference between Islamic and conventional banks, reviewing the principles of Islamic contracts, insurance and securities, and analysing the causes and implications of the financial crisis from the Islamic point of view. The strengths and weaknesses of Islamic finance are identified, the lessons learnt from the credit crunch are analysed. The paper employs the methods of secondary research based on the analysis of related academic literature, media publications, case studies, seminars, etc. Conclusions are made about the effectiveness of Islamic finance arguing whether it can be a solution to the financial crisis.
