The dissertation investigates the issues of capital investment in the Sri Lankan financial sector. Literature is reviewed on the financial system and financial policy of Sri Lanka, the changes within the banking sector, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Sri Lanka, the methods of investment appraisal, accounting and economic bases for capital investments, discounted cash flow techniques, etc. The methods of the research employ secondary data and primary data collected from a questionnaire-based survey among Sri Lankan bank managers to establish their attitude towards the importance of capital investments. Statistical analysis of the survey data is conducted. Conclusions are made about the significance of capital investment into banks and the effectiveness of the practices related to capital investment, i.e. benchmarking, evaluation of sources of funding, etc. Recommendations are suggested to Sri Lankan banks about the need to design a formal capital investment policy.
