The dissertation investigates the financial performance of Libyan banks affected by the global economic and financial crisis. The review of literature touches on the theoretical underpinnings of economic cycles, the causes of financial crises, the vulnerability of the banking systems in emerging economies, etc. The dissertation uses descriptive and explanatory methods based on qualitative and quantitative approach to secondary and primary research. A case study of four leading Libyan banks is conducted using primary data collected via interviews and secondary data analysis including statistics for the four Libyan banks over 2007-2008. The performance of the Libyan banks is compared to that of the US and UK banks. Conclusions are made about the opportunities to stabilise Libyan banks’ financial performance and profitability. Recommendations are suggested to top management of the banking sector in emerging economies.
