The dissertation investigates the nature of foreign direct investment (FDI) in Russian Banks during the financial turmoil of 2008-2009. Literature is reviewed on FDI theory detailing economic, fiscal and monetary factors behind FDI decisions, describing FDI models, considering the link between FDI and WTO membership of the host country, explaining FDI relationship with key economic indicators, etc. A study is conducted of the investment policy of UralSib and Russian Standard Bank (RSB) using primary data collected from interviews with the managers of the two banks, and secondary data obtained from the banks’ annual reports, project summaries, etc. Conclusions are made about the dependence of foreign investment decisions on the overall business environment in the country that was unstable and uncertain in Russia during the studied period.
