Regulatory and financial conditions accompanying the bank’s failure are analyzed discussing Overend Gurney’s investment strategy during the 1850s-1860s, the response of the Bank of England, contemporary legislation towards banks and capital, legal changes over succeeding years, etc. Conclusions are made about commercial risks inherent in banking and the lessons learnt by British regulators from the collapse of Overend Gurney.
