The dissertation investigates the impact of foreign ownership on the performance of the banks in transition economies examining the financial performance of Russian banks during the 2000s. Literature is reviewed on the features of Eastern European banking, the impacts of foreign bank ownership, the relationship between macroeconomic factors and the performance of the foreign banks in the host country, etc. The methodology of the research is based on secondary data and the methods of regression analysis of financial data collected from Eastern European banks, some of which have foreign ownership. A case study of Russian banks is conducted. Recommendations are suggested for the Russian government with regard to the activity of foreign banks in the country.
