The paper examines the factors that determine the strength of a beam supporting a large screen. Two different materials are investigated, i.e. Aluminium and Mild steel addressing the issues of safety, cost and cross-sectional shape of the beam. Shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams for each type of mounting are presented, maximum stresses acting on the selected mounting type are calculated by using the bending moment equation, and compared with the maximum stresses obtained from the ANSYS 9.0 software. Conclusions are made on whether the computational data agree with the theoretical data.
