This dissertation focuses on inflation and interest rates, and examines these topics in reference to consumer spending. The study aims to identify if there was a correlation between housing prices and consumer spending between 1980 and 2009, whether housing prices are a good proxy of inflation rates, and to discuss the role of interest rates in fuelling the housing prices and consumer spending and what determines the significance of interest rates as an explanatory factor. The next section of the dissertation performs a detailed and thorough statistical analysis of the data presented, and the study concludes with a summary of the findings in relation to the objectives.
