The paper examines the reasons why countries wish to join the European Monetary Union (EMU). The research shows that states are attracted by fixed exchange rates, stability, the reduced transaction costs that accompany a single currency, and market integration. The paper reviews Robert Mundel's theory of Optimal Currency Areas – the idea that nation-states are political institutions and that currencies should be based on economically similar region – but also describes how some politicians and governments favour economic union as a means to establish their dream of Europe-wide political union.
