The dissertation addresses the adoption of the euro by the UK. Literature is reviewed on the Optimum Currency Area theory (OCA) exploring the reasons for and against UK joining the European Monetary Union (EMU). Analysis is conducted of economic variables relevant for the decision, including the volatility of the currencies, the amount of international trade before and after joining the EMU, inflation rates, unemployment levels, etc. The methods of the research are based on the analysis of quantitative and quantitative data with the focus on the historical or dynamical fluctuations of the quantitative data. Conclusions are made about the opportunities for the UK to join EMU in the conditions of the global financial crisis.
