The paper analyses the role of the petroleum and agricultural industries in the Nigerian economy addressing the environmental degradation and loss of livelihoods for fishers and farmers in the Niger Delta. Issues surrounding the growth of oil extraction in Nigeria are examined along the lines of the PESTEL model, Porter’s five forces analysis of the country’s oil industry is conducted, the competitive landscape of the oil industry is described. The study is based on secondary research, the impacts of petroleum by-products on the agriculture industry in Nigeria are evaluated suggesting recommendations to the Nigerian government.
