This dissertation examines the impact of oil and gas company operations on the livelihood of the local community in the Niger Delta. The study begins by providing an overview of the topic, and the objectives are to examine the impacts of oil companies on local communities and the environment and whether adapting the NEEDS system into an integrative resilience framework can enforce oil companies to adhere to substantive grassroots CSR programmes in the Niger Delta, to explore the importance of mangroves in Nigeria as a disaster management tool and how oil companies failing to meet CSR obligations are increasing the threat of coastal flooding through improper health and safety regulation, to explore whether it is possible to develop a proactive interagency policy aimed at resilience and adaptive capacity in line with the NGOs and local communities in order to enforce regulation and get oil companies to meet their CSR obligations in the Niger Delta, and to investigate the development of participation rights of Local Communities and whether their empowerment can enforce oil companies to meet their substantive CSR obligations. The review of literature discusses topics like corporate social responsibility (CSR), CSR programs, the development of oil regulation, and the challenges in the region. Data is collected through the case study approach and the desk based review of policies. All of the data is analysed, and conclusions are made regarding recommendations and areas of further research.
