The paper examines the indicators of economic growth arguing that traditional GDP criteria fails to present an objective perspective, and discussing World Development Indicators (WDI), Human Development Index (HDI), the Human Poverty Index (HPI) for developing countries, etc. emphasising the significance of human development for higher productivity and resulting economic growth. Human development issues in Niger are addressed incluing health and safety, threats of famine, food problems, etc. The correlation between peoples' poverty and economic development of the country is substantiated.
