This paper examines the impact of social media on the formation of civil movements against authoritarian regimes since 2005. The movements examined are the 2007 Lawyers Movement against President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, uprisings against president Zain Al Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia, and the uprisings against Hosni Mubarak of Egypt respectively. The paper begins by defining social media and civil society movements, before examining the three civil movements mentioned. Conclusions are made regarding the role that social media played in mobilising the civil movements.
