This proposal aims to present research for a PhD study on the socio-economic impact of dive tourism in Islamic communities, focusing specifically on Dubai. The proposal begins by presenting some history on the chosen subject, and this is followed by a summary of the key aims. These are to identify key economic drivers to the dive tourism industry, to assess how these drivers can be developed to produce a more reliable industry, to see whether dive tourism policies will protect the environment and impact the economy, to identify whether Islamic communities accept or reject tourism, and to assess whether aspects of dive tourism are compatible with Islamic tradition and beliefs. Data will be collected through secondary data analysis, working with communities in Dubai, questionnaires, and interviews. The proposal identifies the advantages this study could have, whilst outlying the structure of the project.
