The dissertation addresses the problem of gender equality looking at the so-called glass ceiling and offering a study of female representation in boardroom and senior management positions. Literature is reviewed on the links between gender and capabilities, the suitability of women for executive management roles, the influence of masculine organisational structure on the measurement of women’s capabilities and performance (the “Old Boys Network”), characteristics associated with male and female leadership positions, etc. The methodology of the research is based on the qualitative approach to the analysis of secondary data combined with a statistical analysis of primary data obtained from interviews with women who had experience in boardroom and senior management. Conclusions are made about the representation of women in their companies at senior and executive levels.
